Employment Insurance changes, January 1, 2017

Since 1971 the EI waiting period has been 14 days (payable on day 15). This means that before an employee can qualify for EI, they must be off work for two weeks before they can receive EI benefits. This also means going two weeks without pay. Earlier this year, the Federal Budget announced they will be reducing the waiting period to 7 days (payable on day 8) effective January 1, 2017.
